A THOROUGH GOOD FELLOW

DAN ALBONE – Inventor of the first Tractor “Ivel”
Born 12 Sep 1860 and died 30 October 1906

Contributed by Vivienne Francis (nee Albone)

The Albone family can be traced back to 1696, when William Albone was baptised.  He was my 6x great grandfather.

The reason this huge family tree was started was because of our famous 2x great uncle Dan Albone.  I have a book on him called "A Thorough Good Fellow", inventor and cyclist.

Among other things he invented the first agricultural tractor, brand name "Ivel" after the river which flows through Biggleswade, safety cycles, an early motor car and endless other things all described in words and pictures in "The Ivel Story" by John Moffitt.

Sadly Dan died suddenly age 46 in Biggleswade in 1906 and the town has a park, road and other places named after him.  He was known worldwide for his inventions and sold his products all over the world.  Apparently one of his original tractors is in the Science Museum in London.

Information taken from email from Vivienne dated 16 October 1007.

NB Dan Albone collapsed and died in his Office on 30 October 1906 at Ivel Agricultural Motors Ltd in Biggleswade
He is buried in Biggleswade Cemetery.
