| LESLIE ARNOLD GODDARD
The cap badge is the regimental badge for the Royal Artillery.
"Japanese massacred British military personnel both patients and staff of Hospital on 14 February 1942 before British Surrender
Alexandra Military Hospital, Singapore, was meant for British military personnel from British Malaya, Singapore and the Far East. On 15 September 1971 the British handed the hospital to the Singapore Government. It is now called Alexandra Hospital.
On 14 February 1942 Japanese Imperial Forces advanced through Kent Ridge down Pasir Panjang Road to Alexandra Military Hospital. The British recreated west through the Hospital. They set up machine guns on the first and second floors to cover their retreat. A lieutenant carried a Red Cross brassed and a white flag to meet the Japanese. The Japanese killed him.
Among the patients in the Hospital were a four Company force nicknamed the Plymouth Argylls who were survivors of the 'Prince of Wales' and 'Repulse' which were sunk by Japanese torpedo bombers off the coast of Kuantan, Pahang, on 10 December 1941.
Japanese troops rushed into the wards and operation theatres and bayoneted a total of 250 patients and staff members. Before they could repeat their brutalities in other wards, an officer ordered them to assemble in the Hospital grounds. The troops, however, removed about 400 patients and staff and locked them up in a staff bungalow nearby. Next day these people were taken out in small groups and shot. The bodies were buried in a mass grave.
Walter Salmon of the Royal Signals wounded by a mortar bomb was hospitalized on the top floor and had come to the canteen. He sat there a stunned witness of the abominable spectacle.
On 15 February when Yamashita heard of the massacre in the Hospital, he went round the beds of the remaining patients and saluted them; he apologized profusely for the shocking conduct of his soldiers. He brought some crates of canned fruits and opened them with his bayonet and served the fruit to the patients.
Later when he learnt that some Japanese soldiers were looting the Hospital he ordered them to be executed.
After the Japanese Surrender in 1945 a book was kept in the Hospital. It contained the names of the victims who were massacred by the Japanese. The present location of the book is not known. "
Jen remembers her dad telling her that they were told the Japanese were killing any patients in bed or wearing bandages, so they were advised to get out of bed and appear able bodied. He went with some of the others onto an upstairs balcony and as a result survive

| LESLIE ARNOLD GODDARD 1910 - 1957
PHOTO TAKEN OF LESLIE AND OTHER SOLDIERS - taken outside The Alexandra British Military Hospital, Singapore prior to the capture of Singapore by the Japanese. He was actually a patient in the hospital when the Japanese arrived on 14 February 1942.
Leslie was the nephew of Rosanne Goddard and John Peters. Leslie Arnold Goddard (1910 – 1957)
Jen’s dad Leslie served during the second world war as a Gunner 1605294 in 3rd H Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery. He enlisted at Oswestry on 12th September 1940. He was first taken to Changi POW camp from February to June 1942 where prisoners were assembled before being moved on to other camps to work on the Burma - Thailand Railway. He was then moved to Ban Pong POW camp, Thailand from June to November 1942, followed by a period at Chun Kai POW camp Thailand from November 1942 to May 1944. He then went to Nakhon Pathom POW camp until January 1945 when he finally returned to Chun Kai before release, following the Japanese surrender in the summer of 1945.

| LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY a photo taken by Alasdair Mackie in September 2006. CHARLES HUDSON KILLED IN WW1 JUNE 11TH 1916 IS BURIED HERE. A MEMORY BY ALASDAIR Here is a nice panorama of Lijensthoek (well, you know where I mean) -
I took this last September 2006 and you can see headstones disappearing
into the distance. This cemetery (you may know) is near Poperinghe
('Pop' to the Tommies) - and is near where the main casualty clearing
stations were. So many soldiers injured around Ieper (Ypres) would
have been brought to this central point, then those who didn't make
it were buried here. Awe-inspiring place. So many men, so many
families affected........
Alasdair

My Grandparent's wedding photo. L. to R. Nancy Kelly, Bert Fear, Maurice Studley Kelly, Ellen Mary Fear, Daniel Fear, ( grandson of Phillis Bennett), Mary Kelly, Phyllis Fear. It is a small photo, so I hope it comes through clearly. My grandmother always stated, she hated her hair in the wedding photo. Her elder half-sister, Ethel Hince did her hair and changed her appearance. She normally had very long hair, that she could sit on.
Thanks Ellen for this photo..much appreciated |
